DDB Sydney MD Kieren Cooney has been named the new CEO of Interbrand Australia, with the aim of taking the company to “the next level in Australia”.

Cooney joined DDB in July last year and formerly held senior executive roles at Telecom New Zealand, Leading Edge, Vodafone and was CMO of NBN Co.

Cooney replaces previous Interbrand CEO Damian Borchok who left last year after co-founding agency, For the People.

Interbrand and DDB Group Australia and New Zealand chairman Marty O'Halloran said Cooney was an obvious choice for the role.

“Very quickly we realised who would be best suited to take Interbrand to the next level in Australia,” O'Halloran said.

“With 20 years experience working at the forefront of some of the region's most dynamic organisation as a highly successful business leader, Kieren is the perfect fit for Interbrand.

“He is a formidable leader and his experience and passion for brand, strategy and innovation will unquestionably lead Interbrand into a period of renewed growth.”

Cooney will continue to lead the Telstra business within the group and will play a key role in the broader DDB Group executive leadership team.

“Technology has changed the way we live and work,” Cooney said. “In order to stay relevant and competitive businesses need to keep in lockstep with their customers' lives.

Cooney's new role is effective immediately.
