Channel Nine's new TV game show You're Back in the Room had a dream ratings debut on Sunday, clocking up 1.16 million metro viewers and even beating My Kitchen Rules in Sydney.

This placed the new show in the number two position behind MKR, which had an average metro audience of 1.23 million viewers.

You're Back in the Room's debut topped several big recent TV show debuts, inclduing Anh Does (976,000), Seven Year Switch (814,000), I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here (694,000) and The Bachelor (710,000).

The show, which saw the return of Australian TV icon Darryl Somers, pits contestants against their own subconcious thoughts as they are required to complete tasks while under the spell of hypnotist Keith Barry.

While the first night's ratings couldn't have gone much better, the reception on social media has been less encouraging as armchair warriors slated the show.

Despite the backlash, the early signs for the show are promising and the concept has been lauded abroad.

You're Back in the Room won the Best Gameshow Format at the International Format Awards in Cannes yesterday.
