Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) has confirmed Richard Oppy, acting marketing director, has been handed the role on a permanent basis.

Oppy stepped into the role last year when former CMO Peter McLoughlin stepped back for health reasons.

Formerly Oppy oversaw the beer portfolio and led the relaunch of VB and Carlton Dry. He is taking on the role at a challenging time in the beer market, with sales in decline, but is bidding to turn it around.

CUB chief operating officer Mike Walsh said: “Richard has worked across every brand in the business and I am confident he will passionately lead our marketing team and become a valued member of our executive team.”

Oppy says one of the biggest challenges he and the team at CUB face is turning the beer category around.

“We know we have to be bold when it comes to innovation and make sure we’re nimble enough to deliver what drinkers want,” he said.
