The Northern Territory News has a readership of almost double the state's population, according to the latest data from readership metric Emma.

According to the 2011 census the Northern Territory has a population of around 200,000, however according to Emma, its newspaper and website has a total monthly readership of 380,000.

In the first yearly release of Emma data in August, The NT News had experienced a growth of 55.6% YOY, surpassing all other publications.

Despite The NT News' efforts The Sydney Morning Herald remains the most read paper according to the Emma data, with the paper attracting a total monthly readership of 5.59 million.

Which is an increase from the previous monthly data which saw the SMH draw an audience of 5.41 million.

Fellow Fairfax papers The Age and The Financial Review also experienced growth in the data period September 2013 – August 2014, The Age gained an audience of 3.38 million up from 3.37 million and The Financial Review grew from 1.4 million to 1.41 million.

The Australian Regional Media (APN) owned Sunshine Coast Daily experienced a boost in audience, growing from 342,000 to 350,000.

News Corp owned paper The Daily Telegraph dipped slightly with its audience falling to 4.33 million from 4.41 million.

According to the industry body for newspapers, The Newspaper Works, print is still the most popular way for people to consume journalism, with print growing in the last three months from 14.6 million to 14.8 million.

The Newspaper Works CEO Mark Hollands said: “The Emma results show that print readership is stable, with readers increasingly moving to mobile consumption of news, which matches general communication trends and commentary about the future of technology.

“Evidence suggests that mobile and print readership offer complementary experiences. Mobile readers tend to snack and go, whereas print readers will stay longer with their newspaper," Hollands said.
