Gogglebox star and new Bachelorette Angie Kent has drawn 716,000 metro viewers overnight in her debut episode as the lead in the reality dating show.

The show was up on last year's season debut featuring former Bachelor contestant Ali Oetjen, which drew 631,000 metro viewers.

Last night's episode drew a further 254,000 regional viewers, taking its total national audience to 971,000 viewers.

“What a fantastic launch for Angie’s season of The Bachelorette - up 22% year on year nationally and smashed all the demos as the #1 show of the night in under 50s and all key demos (16 to 39s, 18 to 49s and 25 to 54s)," Network Ten head of network programming Dan Monaghan says.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the result for what is the best season of The Bachelorette yet. Angie is funny, warm and authentic, we can’t wait for the rest of the country to follow fairytale.”

Despite being up on last year's audience, The Bachelorette was unable to quash Nine's The Block, which won the primetime slot with 855,000 overnight metro viewers.

The reality home improvement show also cracked over one million national viewers with 315,000 regional viewers tuning in, taking the total national audience to 1.17 million.

Seven came third in the commercial primetime race, continuing to struggle as Bride and Prejudice Forbidden Weddings drew 397,000 metro viewers and a total of 612,000 nationally.
