ASTRA winners announced, Defence Force Recruiting wins best ad

Defence Force Recruiting has won the most outstanding advertising campaign in the annual ASTRA Industry Awards.

The awards recognise achievement in marketing, public relations, advertising, social media and promotion in the subscription television industry in Australia.

The awards included ten categories – three of which were new this year to recognise the behind the scenes talent in the industry.

Andrew Maiden, CEO of ASTRA, said: “The awards shine a light on the creative brains that drive subscription television. They are people whose talent and enterprise make subscription television so distinctive, original and creative”.

The event was hosted by MTV Australia’s Kate Peck. The History Channel's Steve Liebman,Fox Sports' Matt Shirvington, actors Craig Hall and Sara Wiseman and Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein.

The winners were:

Most Outstanding Campaign Under $50,000: Gogglebox Australia – ‘Gogglebox Yourself’
Most Outstanding Use of Innovation: Selling Houses Australia – ‘Social Editions’
Most Outstanding Social Media Campaign: Selling Houses Australia – ‘Social Editions’
The other award winners are:
Most Outstanding OffAir Promotion (also a new category): ‘Game of Thrones Season 5’

Most Outstanding OnAir Promotion: ‘Fox Footy – 2015 Season Launch’ (FOX FOOTY)
Most Outstanding Public Relations Campaign: ‘SLIMEFEST 2014’ (Nickelodeon)
Most Outstanding Advertising Campaign: ‘Defence Force Recruiting’ for The Recruit Season 1 (FOX8)

“There can be little doubt that subscription television sits apart from its competitors in terms of quality. It gives creative people the freedom to execute campaigns that are diverse, highly creative and sometimes even daring,” said Maiden.

The winners of the three inaugural awards for individual achievement are:
● ASTRA Creative Professional of the Year: Dan Aldridge, Head of Creative, BBC (BBC)
● ASTRA Rising Star: Abdel Moorhouse, Programming Assistant, (Foxtel Arts)
● ASTRA Television Professional of the Year: Geoff Crane, Camera & Operations Director, (SKY NEWS Australia)
Highly Commended in the TV professional of the year was Carly Heaton, Head of Brand Strategy and Creative, A&E, History, Bio and crime + investigation

Speaking about the winners of these new behind the scenes awards, maiden said: “We regard them as our industry’s unsung heroes, professionals whose work behind the scenes deserves formal recognition, like the stars themselves.

“Our winners are unsung heroes whose extraordinary contribution isn't often recognised and celebrated. While our TV stars shine on stage every year at the ASTRAs, tonight's industry awards are for behind the scenes professionals whose work contributes just as much to the industry's success,” said Maiden.
