News Corp Australia is offering four weeks of free digital access to its metro titles amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The publisher will give new subscribers to The Daily Telegraph, The Herald Sun, The Courier Mail and The Advertiser the first 28 days free. Sky News’ COVID-19 channel is also part of the offer.

It comes as News Corp Australia reports a spike in audience numbers as people seek updates on the pandemic.

While it hasn’t provided figures on how many people have recently subscribed, News Corp Australia says digital subscriptions have lifted by at least 25% across its publications.

Reader revenue has been increasingly important for publishers given the long-term decline in advertising revenue due to the arrival of digital platforms such as Google and Facebook.

Last week, when announcing staff cuts at the company, Miller said that falling business confidence caused by coronavirus has impacted advertising revenue.

Foxtel, owned by News Corp, also recently revealed it would be opening up more channels to subscribers for free.
