Specialists marketing global work solutions company Aquent has released its 2023 salary guide, a transparent look at advertising industry pay across Australia.

The study also has hard data on a stubborn gender pay gap.

The report analysed 8,266 base salaries in December 2022 through their real-time salary comparison tool, Compare My Salary. Salaries do not include superannuation or bonuses.

Overall, an agency general manager had the highest pay at $318,750, followed by head of eCommerce on $260,000 and service design lead on $240,000

Next head of digital product, head of digital and head of strategy on $220,000.

Aquent data also reveals that there continues to be a significant salary gap between genders, with men making 16% more than women on average across all digital marketing, creative and development roles.

This is 6.8% lower than the Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s (WGEA) recent data which reports the pay gap to be 22.8% for 2021/2022 across all industries.

For example, the most extreme pay difference is for a customer insights analyst where females get 52.9% less pay than males. Second is for an agency general manager role with females receiving 29.9% less than males.

While most roles show higher salaries for men. Some positions are balanced, such as copywriter, marketing assistant, and graphic designer among others. And others with higher salaries to men in contrast to women such as SEO managers, front-end developers and agency senior strategists.
