News Limited has hired Business Spectator publisher and general manager Nicholas Gray as chief executive of The Australian.

Gray will start his new role as CEO of The Australian on Wednesday 29 May 2013. News Limited boss Kim Williams said: “Nicholas has been central in driving Business Spectator and the integration of its product with our other assets. He is a real digital native, understands news and journalism and is absolutely customer focused."

Gray joined Business Spectator in June 2011 and currently leads all non-editorial functions of the business. Prior to his current role, he spent four years at Ninemsn as national sales director, after roles as chief financial officer and strategy director.

Before joining the company, he was strategy manager at Lion Nathan. He has also worked as an investment banker at Citigroup in London and Macquarie Bank in Sydney.

Gray said the masthead had been his "newspaper of choice" for many years and was "thrilled" with the appointment.
