DJ Mel Greig is to appear at the inquest into the death of the nurse who hanged herself after answering a prank call from the 2Day FM radio station that tragically backfired.

In December Greig and fellow host Michael Christian had impersonated the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. In a prank call they asked to be put through to Catherine Middleton, wife of Prince William, who was being treated at the King Edward VII's Hospital in Marylebone, London, for morning sickness.

Jacintha Saldanha answered the call and put it through to the ward. Three days later she was found dead. Saldanha left three suicide notes, one of which blamed the DJs, it emerged on Sunday.

Lawyers Slater & Gordon issued a statement on behalf of Greig that said the DJ “fully understands their need for answers, which is why she has taken this step to appear as an individual at the inquest”.

“She is determined to address any questions surrounding her role in these tragic events as part of the inquest.

“Ms Greig wants the family to know she will answer any questions the coroner or the family’s lawyers may have at the inquest.”

The firm sated that Greig would make no further comment until the inquest which is set to continue this week.
