Deakin University and creative agency Hardhat have launched the Mind Racer program, featuring Australia's first brain-computer interface (BCI) technology.

The technology connects the user's brain to the device and allows them to direct the race car with signals from the brain.

It has been trialled at Deakin University's Open Day and will continue to be rolled out at upcoming events.

The university's Cognitive Neuroscience Unit is researching BCI technology and the Mind Racer campaign allows them to showcase the technology.

“Given that driving the digital frontier is part of Deakin’s core DNA, we wanted to bring that to life in a really engaging way for students at Open Day.” Deakin’s head of brand and content, Jessica McCartney, says.

“It’s been really exciting watching this project develop with Hardhat and I was absolutely thrilled to watch so many students getting involved in its first run.”

Hardhat’s director of strategy Dan Monheit said Mind Racer lets people understand the power of the mind.

“We wanted people to experience that in a way that was fun and interactive, and what’s more fun and interactive than a giant, mind controlled race track?” Monheit says.
