Westpac has appointed ANZ Banking Group general manager of Australia operations John Harries as general manager of strategic marketing, to replace Damian Eales.

It was revealed last month that Westpac's top marketer Eales would be stepping down from the role.

Eales had been in the top marketing position for just over 18 months. He was head of marketing for the Australian Financial Group, which included the Westpac retail brand and the St. George Banking Group, which includes St. George, Bank of Melbourne, BankSA and BT Financial Group.

Eales had been recruited to Westpac from David Jones.

Westpac’s Australian financial services chief executive, Peter Hanlon, said: “I am very pleased to be welcoming John Harries - an executive with broad and deep financial services experience and a strong record of achievement.”

Harries will join Westpac in October. He will report to incoming Australian financial services chief executive Brian Hartzer. The Australian has previously reported Eales had been a casualty of the arrival of Hatzer, who is the number two for managing director and chief executive Gail Kelly.

Harries has held a variety of roles within ANZ, including managing director of retail products, managing director of consumer finance, managing director of banking products and head of products and marketing in mortgages.
