Westpac defends social media position

Westpac has defended its censoring of comments posted on its Facebook page, claiming the comments it deleted were “racist”, “offensive” and “propaganda”.

The bank had been criticised over the weekend for deleting negative comments on social media, following its decision to raise interest rates and cut staff numbers.

A Westpac spokesperson told AdNews the bank has a policy around its social media activities and that racist and offensive comments will be taken down, along with propaganda. The spokesperson said there are a lot of negative comments about Westpac currently on its Facebook page.

“The primary purpose of our social media operations is customer outreach,” he said.

“Westpac wants its customers to feel comfortable. We need to operate within the protcols we have made clear.”
