Thousands of people have signed a Change.org petition rallying for brands to boycott 2GB's Alan Jones following his comments about women "destroying the joint".

The 2GB shock jock faced a barrage of criticism for his recent attack on female politicans including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, declaring they were "destroying the joint".

Jones' comments were in response to the Government's $320 million initiative to improve female participation within the Pacific Islands, with Gillard arguing socities only reach their full potential if women are involved politically, economically and socially.

Jones, on 31 August 2012, said: "She [Gillard] said that we know societies only reach their full potential if women are politically participating. Women are destroying the joint – Christine Nixon in Melbourne, Clover Moore here. Honestly."

The shock jock had previously attacked the Prime Minister in June and July 2011, suggesting she be "put in a chaff bag" and dropped into the sea.

Jones' comments have driven thousands of consumers to express their disgust on social media and rally for advertisers to boycott the show, with the controversy now manifesting itself into a Change.org petition.

Started by Andrew McKeown of Ainslie in the Australian Capital Territory, the petiton currently has over 5,475 signatures.

It has been aimed at brands which advertise on 2GB and has argued a mass boycott would force Jones to apologise for his "sexist tirade" and stop working against gender equality.

It said: "Alan Jones' radio show is broadcast between 5.30 am and 9.00 am and many young people would have heard this over the breakfast table, or in the car on the way to school.

"These comments do nothing to stop violence against women.

"It is surprising that any company would want to pay money to associate its branding with such sexist comments.

"We call on all companies who advertise on 2GB to publicly distance themselves from Alan Jones' latest sexist tirade, and to make a contribution to furthering gender equality as a sign of support.

The petiton follows the creation of a dedicated Facebook page and Twitter campaign, both carrying the slogan 'Destroy the joint'.

The Facebook page has claimed to be a "page for people who are sick of the sexism dished out to women in public roles in Australia, whether they be out Prime Minister or Charlotte Dawson". It has over 6,000 likes and has several images of women working, accompanied by quotes satirising Jones' comments.

Twitter has seen thousands of Tweets carrying the hashtag #DestroyTheJoint.
