The Australian has appointed managing editor Louise Evens to the newly created role of commercial editor, as it readies itself for the introduction of a paywall next month.

In a statement sent out by News Limited: “The aim of the role is to bridge the gap between editorial and the commercial side of the business and to develop major strategic projects that showcase The Australian's unique content and build on the newspaper's strong brand.”

The appointment comes as News Limited begins conversations about the launch of The Australian paywall, talking to media agencies about the merits of the freemium model.

Louise previously held the position as The Australian's managing editor and has worked at the paper for 10 years across a number of senior editorial roles, including sports editor, national deputy chief of staff, features editor and columnist, and Olympic editor. Previously she worked for Fairfax and AAP, including five years as a foreign correspondent in London and Beijing.

As part of her new role Evans will continue to plan The Australian's Olympic Games coverage as chief of staff of The Australian's team at the London 2012 Games and beyond.

Helena Trinca, currently the chief leader writer, has been appointed managing editor. Trinca is a former deputy editor and a former editor of The Weekend Austrian Magazine.
