News Limited has announced another departure from the company, with The Australian's chief operating officer John Allan leaving at the end of this week after six years at the company.

In an internal email, News managing director of Group Newspapers and Digital Products Jerry Harris said Allan had resigned. Harris said: “John has made a big contribution to our company. He led the development of NewsLocal websites and wherelive.com.au. He was also CEO of TrueLocal.com.au leading its growth from 2008 to 2011.”

Unlike other recent exits from News Limited, Allan's resignation appears amicable. The internal email includes a friendly farewell from editor-in-chief of The Australian Chris Mitchell.

“John’s extensive experience and understanding of both the newspaper and digital arena has been invaluable to The Australian. We are the leading digital subscription newspaper in the country and I’d like to thank John for his contribution to our success,” Mitchell said.

Since June 2011, Allan has been the COO of The Australian where he led its commercial and digital strategy. The Australian claims more than 40,000 digital subscribers.

On his time at News, Allan was quoted in the email: “It has been an incredible journey at News over the past six plus years. I’ve worked with some highly talented people across both the digital and newspaper businesses and I leave the organisation in their capable hands. I’d like to thank Chris Mitchell, my management team and all our staff who create world-leading newspapers and digital assets every day and wish them well for the future.”

Harris said Allan's replacement would be announced shortly.
