Star Observer newspaper arrives in Queensland

Gay & Lesbian Community Publishing Limited has merged its newspapers in NSW and Victoria to create a national product to better connect Australia's gay and lesbian community.

Responding to demands from the Queensland market, Gay & Lesbian Community Publishing is launching a single 64-page newspaper on Friday called Star Observer in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This follows a 200% growth in online readership in 12 months, according to the company which claims it has the third highest readership in Queensland.

Gay & Lesbian Community Publishing Limited chairman Daniel Bone said: “We looked at possibility of creating a Queensland specific paper, but we felt there are enough issues in the community  for a national presence to make sense. Also, a lot of political issues are now Federal and there is less legal reform required at a state level.

“The new larger publication, simply titled Star Observer, hitting the streets on a new publication day, replaces existing papers Sydney Star Observer and Southern Star Observer, but still delivers the quality local, national and international lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and intersex questioning (LGBTIQ) journalism these publications are renowned for.”.

Gay & Lesbian Community Publishing Limited CEO Scott Abrahams said the expansion was a natural move for Star Observer titles, which have the highest audited circulation of any LGBTIQ newspaper in Australia.

“This move allows organisations like Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival, Brisbane Pride Festival and Sydney Mardi Gras to get their message out to a national audience and facilitates better communication across the entire country," he said.

“It also provides Australia’s LGBTIQ community a single, trusted news and information source that will keep them connected on important issues like the fight for marriage equality and the need for an Australian human rights charter.

“We are excited to evolve with Australia’s changing media landscape and will continue to be the national paper of record for the LGBTIQ community.”
