While the South Australian Government has committed to giving the state a new brand image, Business SA chief executive Peter Vaughan wants to see a complete name change via a public contest.
Premier Jay Weatherill recently said during a trade mission to England that South Australia needs a new brand image, asking the Economic Development Board to come up with a new brand positioning.
However, the task did not involve a name change for the state.
Vaughan, however, has said the name itself is creating confusion, because people think Australia refers to the whole southern portion of Australia rather than one state.
He also said the commonly used abbreviation for the state, SA, can cause confusion with South Africa.
The solution, Vaughan said, would be a public contest, where people are given the opportunity to select the most appropriate name for the state.
In the late '90s, adman John Singleton suggested the state should be renamed “Bradman” after cricketer Donald Bradman. At the time, he said the current name is “boring”, but also said there was a ver6y small chance the name would be changed.
