Seven aced Sunday night with the epic six-hour Australian Open men's final match between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic drawing in a high of 2.41 million fans, while Ten increased its 'Super Sunday' viewers.
The five-setter match between the world numbers one and two, Djokovic and Nadal, ran for a record five hours and 53 minutes with the match lasting well past 1am. The game peaked with an average audience of 2.41 million metro viewers during one of its time-slots, according to preliminary overnight figures from OzTam. 751,000 viewers were still tuned in between 1am and 2am to witness Djokovic's eventual triumph.
The match averaged 1.86 million viewers across the six-hour block, a 34.7% increase on the 2011 final.
Despite the lure of the heavy-hitting tennis aces on Seven, Ten still managed to increase audience numbers with its 'Super Sunday' line-up, which premiered the previous weekend.
The relaunched youth performance show Young Talent Time drew in 1.08 million viewers, up on last week's 1.05 million. US comedies Modern Family and New Girl had 1.16 and 1.29 million viewers respectively, up on last week's 1.13 and 1.28 million viewers. New Girl was the most watched content yesterday apart from the tennis.
American drama series Homeland was marginally down on its previous outing with 1.17 million viewers from 1.22 million.
Across the main channels, Seven convincingly won the night with the tennis coverage and third highest rating program in Seven News, with a 37.7% audience share. Ten was second with its 'Super Sunday' line-up taking the remaining top positions with an audience share of 18.8%. Nine was third with 14%, the ABC with 9.4% and SBS had 3.6%.
