MediaCom Melbourne managing director Phil Phelan is to leave after 15 years. Former Carat chief executive and MediaCom new business director Peter Barrie will take over as managing director with immediate effect.

"MediaCom has given me a lot," Phelan said in a press release. "A great career, significant personal and public achievements, the chance to work with an amazing array of great marketers, and many lasting friendships and experiences. It is the strongest media agency in Australia and I know it has an exciting and successful future ahead of it. After a rewarding 15 year career in media it’s time for me to apply myself to new challenges."

MediaCom chief executive Mark Pejic stated that Phelan and Barrie will work together during a transition period and that MediaCom was as committed to making Phelan's transition to new pastures a success as Phelan was to making Barrie's transition into the new role go smoothly.

"Phil is committed to our business in the short term, as we are to his successful move, and he will assist Peter in transitioning into the managing director role," Pejic said. "Whilst he will be sincerely missed, we wish him continued success as he steps into the next chapter of his career".

Phelan's next steps were not mentioned in the release. MediaCom is a finalist in the AdNews Agency of the Year Awards category of Media Network of the Year.
