Holden tops Aussie car brands on social

By Natalie Talbutt and Rosie Baker | 12 March 2014

We've looked at the numbers and it appears Holden is winning the race on social across the automotive category in Australia.

By combining the number of followers the top 10 auto brands in Australia have on Facebook, Twitter and the views they have racked up on YouTube, we've created a league table.

But it turns out that table was wrong. We're trying to work out which brands are adding in global or regional numbers, but it's not easy. Facebook said it doesn't break the data down locally, and that it was up to the brands to do so. Some of the car brands appear to be wrapping in regional and global numbers and presenting it on their Australian social media sites. They were in no hurry to break it down for us.

What we do know is that Holden's numbers are probably safe as the brand only operates locally (ANZ).

As of last week, Holden is in front with 8,370,498 total, fans, followers and views across the platforms owned by Google, Facebook and Twitter.

So here's a top one.

*An earlier version of this article incorrectly put Nissan in front, based on the Nissan Australia Facebook page which aggregates global 'likes' on its Australian site. Other car brands, and readers, have subsequently pointed out that the data doesn't look right. Others have mooted that likes are irrelevant and that engagement is the key metric. Which will spawn a number of articles. We will post the correct data, as compiled by a helpful agency, soon.
