Murdoch recalled over hacking scandal

The British House of Commons has recalled News Corp chief operating officer James Murdoch for questioning, after former News of the World executives claimed he had knowledge of phone hacking at the disgraced publication.

Following speculation on Monday (12 September) that he might be recalled, it has been widely reported that Rupert Murdoch’s heir apparent will appear for a second round of questioning.

The parliament’s media committee already questioned both James and Rupert Murdoch in July, however committee chairman John Whittingdale told Sky News television that there were some “loose ends” which needed to be addressed.

Last week former NOTW editor Colin Myler and the publication’s former legal manager Tom Crone gave testimony which alleged that the younger Murdoch was aware of the widespread phone hacking at the newspaper.

Both Murdochs have denied any direct knowledge of phone hacking at the organisation. It is unsure if James Murdoch will agree to appear, as he is an American citizen and the committee can only compel British citizens.

James Murdoch is widely viewed to be the natural successor to his father’s empire, although his succession could be threatened if the inquiry discovers that he was aware of phone hacking.
