Murdoch likely to be recalled over NOTW scandal

British MPs will decide tomorrow whether News International boss James Murdoch will reappear for more questioning over the News Of The World phone hacking scandal.

The decision follows damning testimony from former NOTW editor Colin Myler and chief lawyer Tom Crone last week, alleging Murdoch was well aware phone hacking was widespread across the newspaper.

The pair told the committee hearing they went to James Murdoch in 2008 over the “for Neville” email, which allegedly obtained hacked information about Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor.

Crone and Myler said Murdoch was made aware of the problem during a 15-minute meeting where they discussed the lawsuit brought forward by Taylor. Subsequently, News International paid Taylor a settlement of around $640,000AU.

If proven Murdoch did know of the matter it could seriously threaten his succession to the top job of News Corporation boss, currently held by his father Rupert. It has been widely tipped James would be the natural successor to his father’s media empire.
