Melbourne has beaten Sydney in January ad revenue figures, as the overall market increases 1.38% to a total of $45.4 million.

The Sydney market most frequently records the highest advertising revenue, however the market saw negative growth in January, declining 0.15% to $13.7 million, according to Commercial Radio Australia (CRA).

The mass exodus of advertisers from Southern Cross Austereo's cash cow Kyle & Jackie O may have had a small impact on the decline in revenue figures in the Sydney market.

Melbourne had the highest revenue, growing 6.07% to $13.73 million. The most growth was seen in Adelaide, which grew 6.1% to a total of $4.4 million. Brisbane fell 1.4%, while Perth fell 4.4%.

CRA chief executive Joan Warner said said the national advertising market is patchy, and that local events have influenced different markets. She also said the market is still soft.

“The resilience of radio as a cost effective and efficient advertising medium is a great asset during tough trading conditions. The industry must continue to promote the benefits of radio and its ability to deliver for advertisers in tighter economic conditions.”
