Feeling overwhelmed by the pace of change? Facing tighter budgets and shorter deadlines, forced to do more with less? You're not alone. It can be a "horrible" industry. But there is hope. There is always hope.
Amanda Gore, renowned speaker and best-selling author, will be bringing her unique perspective to the Media Sales Summit on 22 May. The bottom line? "The single most important thing in life is how you feel about yourself," she says.
A communications and corporate performance expert, Gore will draw on insights gleaned from the latest research in neuroscience and positive psychology to offer concrete tips for media sales professionals to manage stress and avoid burn-out – and maybe even boost results.
"People in media sales, all media, know – it's awful, it's horrible. It's fast, stress-filled and burn-out material. The whole thing is geared towards speed and pressure, and results, getting everything done. Do more with less and do it fast. The stuff I'm talking about will help them do more with less and stay sane at the end of it.
"Burn-out is about how you feel about yourself. You're overwhelmed, saying, I can't cope, I just can't do this anymore. You allow yourself to get into a mental hole and don't do the things that recharge your batteries, which leads to a physical hole, and then you just leave or collapse."
According to Gore, how you feel about yourself determines your entire environment – and if you're miserable, you won't be able to develop the relationships you need to succeed in sales, because ultimately "all business is about feelings".
"People who do extremely well in sales are the ones who a) feel good about themselves, b) are really good at building rapport, c) change their perceptions so they see themselves as partners sitting beside people, metaphorically, and d) continuously learn, unlearn and re-learn.
"When you perceive yourself as a partner in someone else's business, where the two of you work together to solve a problem, then it shifts the whole dynamic of the relationship. The sorts of things we'll be talking about are subtle but extremely powerful."
Happiness is the new competitive advantage. Get yours at the Media Sales Summit on 22 May at Doltone House, Hyde Park. The one-day event will kick off with Gore's talk on the art of self management before delving into the nitty-gritty of what the coming decade has in store.
