Major brands support Cleo to 'stop the sexism'

Popular brands including Napoleon Perdis and The Iconic are offering women a 17.5% discount this month and next, as part of a new initiative by Cleo magazine to fight pay gender inequality.

The initiative follows an analysis of 123 companies by the Bauer-owned women's magazine, which revealed women in the same roles as men were being paid up to 25% less, while some companies had failed to promote women to senior roles.

Flexigroup, Macquarie Bank, ACE Insurance, BNP Paribas and J.P. Morgan were some of the companies with discrepancies between male and female pay and positions, Cleo said. Editor Sharri Markson said: "We found a horrible picture of inequality in some of Australia’s largest and most prestigious companies."

The magazine is aiming to equalise pay within the company and has launched a Change.org petition called 'Ditch the Pay Gap' in a bid to initiate change within such companies. It currently has 138 signatures. A portion of the text reads: "The gender pay gap is 17.5%. In the finance and insurance industry it’s 33.6%. And it’s getting worse. ABS data shows the pay gap has grown in the past 20 years.

"Companies are not changing. For the first time we’re naming some of the worst offenders and fighting for them to stop the sexism. [...] Get fired up and sign our petition to end the pay gap today."

Local companies supporting the cause include make-up brand Napoleon Perdis and fashion retailers Glue Store, Boohoo.com and The Iconic. The brands will offer women a 17.5% discount off all purchases for differing time periods this month and next.

Salsa's Fresh Mex Grill is also offering a 17.5% discount for women, today only. Chrysler Cafe and St. James Coffee also offered the discount on all hot drinks this morning from 9.30-11am and 8-11am respectively.
