Lion creates a virtual pub

Food and beverage company Lion has launched an iPhone App called The Publican where users can operate a virtual pub.

The idea of the app came from Lion commercial analyst marketing and innovation James Malkin, and was developed in conjunction with digital agency Holler.

The app enables players to operate and own a virtual pub. They are faced with the challenge of pouring beers without spilling anything and earning tips. Players can post and share their progress through Facebook.

Malkin said: “It's a simple idea that taps into that innate curiosity I think lives in us all – running our own pub and experiencing the 'other' side of the bar.

“The Publican was developed as a way to engage with beer lovers in a new and fun way, which we think it does really well.  It’s also an opportunity for us to engage consumers with our brands in really simple ways by, for instance, using brand graphics that represent our brands.”

Matt Tapper, Lion national marketing director – beer, spirits & wine Australia, said: “We chose James' idea because we loved its simplicity. We think The Publican offers consumers something they can engage with and for many it may be the only way they can fulfil a dream to own their own pub.”

The app is available on the iTunes store.

The idea of the app came from Lion commercial analyst marketing and innovation James Malkin, and was developed in conjunction with digital agency Holler.

The app enables players to operate and own a  virtual pub. They are faced with the challenge of pouring beers without spilling anything and earning tips. Players can post and share their progress through social media site Facebook.

Malkin said: “It's a simple idea that taps into that innate curiosity I think lives in us all – running our own pub and experiencing the 'other' side of the bar.

“I was previously working in corporate tax, so I never anticipated that I would get the chance to spearhead a project to create an original iPhone App.”
