Ten Network Holdings has appointed Lachlan Murdoch, formerly the company's interim chief executive, as chairman, replacing Brian Long.

Long will become deputy chairman and lead independent director.

Murdoch was interim chief executive for Ten while the company waited for current CEO James Warburton to arrive in January.

Long said: “The Board is pleased that Lachlan has agreed to accept the role of non-executive chairman. His extensive media experience will provide Ten with invaluable strategic leadership.

“As Interim CEO he reset Ten’s strategic vision and cost base and was instrumental in recruiting Ten’s new chief executive officer, James Warburton.”

In addition to this appointment, Warburton has joined the Ten board as managing director.

Rumours have been circulating that Lachlan Murdoch's father, media mogul Rupert Murdoch, also wants him as chairman of News Limited, a role currently held by Rupert.

There is no rule precluding one person from being a chairman of multiple companies. Media Mogul Kerry Stokes is chairman of multiple companies, including Seven West Media and Seven Group Holdings.
