It's not the award the industry deserves, but the one it needs right now. The retail industry body has teamed up with the outspoken entrepreneur to create the Kogan Online Retailer of the Year Award. The move is a recognition both of online's growing significance in the struggling Australian retail market, and of Kogan's position as a heavyweight in the space.
Australian Retailer's Association executive director Russell Zimmerman said the new award, to be presented at the Retail Awards breakfast on 23 July, was a much-anticipated addition to the mix. "Online retail has become a significant part of the industry. Kogan and the ARA have decided it's time to start recognising high-achievers in this space," he said.
"The ARA is thrilled that the largest Australian-owned online retailer has teamed up with us to recognise the inaugural Australian Online Retailer of the Year. After shipping a single container of TVs seven years ago, Kogan has transformed into a $250 million-a-year business, and has been a trailblazer in educating Australians about the benefits of shopping online."
Ruslan Kogan, founder and chief executive of Kogan.com, said: "We believe technology makes the world a better place, and our goal is to make the latest technology more affordable for everyone. We also recognise that online retail can create efficiencies in other markets, and create win-win situations for consumers and businesses alike.
"Retailing today is much broader than simply a bricks-and-mortar store. In the past, retail awards would recognise exceptional merchandising and in-store layout. Today, retail excellence is also measured by website design, digital strategies and cutting-edge marketing strategies. That's why we're proud to support this award and see continued innovation in Australian e-commerce."
The award winner will be an Australian online retailer with the ability to demonstrate a strong track record in building its business, leading customer service, executing cutting-edge marketing strategies and pursuing an innovative approach to online retailing.
