IPG Mediabrands' honcho Henry Tajer has ended ongoing speculation that he will take a New York-based role. Tajer has been promoted to chief operating officer of the firm's global operations but will remain in Sydney, the company announced this morning.

Tajer will likely spend significantly more time overseas as a result of the promotion, but will continue to run IPG Mediabrands local operation.

“The IPG Mediabrands Australia operations have been one of our outstanding success stories in recent years and contains 12 operating units,” said Matt Seiler, global CEO of IPG Mediabrands, in a statement.

“With our clearly defined network growth objectives, including reaching 50% automation in North America by 2016 and our global markets thereafter, we need a strong executive to take the lead across all platforms. Henry has shown a great ability to move the needle creatively through technology, our pay for performance model and strong client relationships. Given this, I am certain that Henry is the right executive to lead this charge in order to maintain our position of innovation and speed to market,” said Seiler.

Tajer has been executive chairman of IPG Mediabrands Australia for the past three years and before that he was CEO of UM in Australia and Asia Pacific.

“IPG Mediabrands has high ambitions for growth across the global business with a focus on innovation through the creative use of skill sets and technology,” said Tajer. “The network has performed very well and my energies will focus on accelerating initiatives that continue to lift our performance for clients and for our businesses overall."

Tajer takes on the new global COO role with immediate effect.
