For one night only: The Greens' same-sex marriage ad

The Greens has released an ad in support of same-sex marriage.

The Greens has launched a TV ad in support of same-sex marriage. But it only aired last night on one cable channel and won't again for the foreseeable future.

The ad was launched last night on Sky News but a spokesperson for Senator Sarah Hanson-Young's office told AdNews that yesterday's run was the extent of the media buy for the moment. There are no current plans to run the ad on TV anywhere else.

It is being pushed through The Greens' social media platforms and through supporter communications. In the past, The Greens has asked supporters to donate cash towards funding broadcast runs of its advertising, but no such plea is being made for this particular campaign.

The ad highlighted two out three Australians are in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in Australia and called on voters to throw their support behind The Greens.

The ad featured an older couple where the female informs her male partner that contrary to his belief that no one he knows supports same-sex marriage, many of his inner circle is actually behind the push. The ad was made by the federal Greens' creative agency, The Republic of Everyone.

Greens LGBTI spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said in a statement: “The Greens care about all Australians, regardless of their sexuality, and that's why we will keep standing up for the LGBTI community until we achieve equality.

“Thousands of same-sex couples in Australia are being forced to travel overseas to wed and this government is making them leave their marriage certificates at the customs gate when they return.

“The Greens have a long and proud history of standing up for gay and lesbian Australians. It's high time the old parties realised they are behind the times on marriage equality and got on with the business of representing the views of the people who elected them.”
