Fairfax media CEO Greg Hywood has labelled The Australian a "dinosaur" for retaining its broadsheet format as his firm resized its newspapers to compact format.
In a group email to Fairfax staff, he said News Limited "should be thanked for all of its free publicity". Of The Australian, he said "we all know what happens to dinosaurs..."

Hi all,
I want to congratulate everyone involved in delivering the new compact formats of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, the more engaging new websites, mobile sites and the evening edition of the iPad apps. We have terrifically talented people and it is there for all to see today.
Rarely in the history of Australian media have we seen change of this magnitude and importance. My office is being overwhelmed by messages of congratulations. Well done one and all.
We should probably thank News Ltd, and in particular The Australian, for all the free publicity. Protesting a little too much I think. Everyone in the media knows that The Australian is resolutely resisting much-needed change, and we all know what happens to dinosaurs…
We have had the guts to take charge of the future – and the Metros and our readers are the winners.
Regards,
Greg
