Retailer David Jones and furniture chain Freedom were awarded top honours at the Australian Catalogue Awards in Melbourne.

David Jones won the Catalogue of the Year (under 1.5 million copies) for its "Summer Brand Book Twenty Ten" catalogue. Freedom won Catalogue of the Year (over 1.5 million copies) for its "Autumn Collection 2011" catalogue.

Other winners include Cumming Agency & Studios, who won Agency of the Year, Plush's Amanda Bailey who was crowned Young Designer of the Year, and Paddy Pallin in the Environment and Sustainability category.

Fashion and homewares retailer Country Road won the Direct Marketing category, while Mazda took out Vehicles and Vacations, and R.M. Williams won Fashion Apparel. Other category winners included Estee Lauder, Big W, Bob Jane T Marts, Harvey Norman New Zealand, Myer, Target and Woolworths.

Australian Catalogue Association chief executive Ken Bishop said: "With over 700 entries, the judges deliberated over a very strong field. It was a terrific evening and a fitting way to recognise both a milestone year for the association and some outstanding catalogues produced over the year.

"The awards night highlights the importance of creativity and design, which underpins the effectiveness of the medium. Catalogues remain a core component of many retailers' marketing mix and it's important we recognise the creative industry behind it."
