The third and final round of the AdNews Agency Rankings for 2013 is done and dusted. As expected, there was considerable movement in the field as we entered the home stretch, but the overall standings paint a positive picture of the wealth and diversity of talent in the Australian agency landscape. While McCann ended the previous round holding what appeared to be an all but unassailable lead, with a record-breaking awards haul for Metro Trains’ ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ putting it well clear of its nearest rivals, the final wash-up proved that one campaign does not an agency make.

That’s because the third round factors in a separate ranking from points awarded in various Agency of the Year programs – namely AdNews, B&T, Mumbrella and Campaign Brief – with the overall score arrived at by combining ranks for work points and AOTY points.

Once those two sides of the coin were factored in, the big winners were Clemenger BBDO, UM, GPY&R, McCann, Leo Burnett and Soap Creative, which all placed first (or equal first) across the various rankings tables either by office or by network. Other agencies of note were The Monkeys, Whybin TBWA, Match Media, MEC, MediaCom and Lavender.

Of course there are plenty of great agencies that don’t win – or even enter – awards programs, and the time and resource required inevitably favours the bigger shops. But awards rankings serve as a handy starting point for clients – and give everyone something to talk about.

On another note, new this year in the AdNews Rankings is a ranking of media companies based on awards they have won. Firstly, we have ranked 20 media organisations according to points scored in five award programs that recognise the company as a whole. Secondly, we have ranked media companies for their work as recognised in eight separate media awards. See here for more details.
