Telstra’s chief marketing officer Mark Buckman is now officially part of the new media establishment with his appointment on Friday to run Telstra Media’s IPTV and digital media assets.

He retains his role as chief marketing officer but adds to his remit the title of executive director, digital media and IPTV, replacing J.B. Rousselot who is heading to France for a short time before returning to Australia. It is not yet clear what his plans are.

Mr Buckman will be responsible for key sports rights and content across flagship properties such as the AFL and NRL, BigPond TV, BigPond Movies and IPTV services such as T-Box. He will also cover off content and distribution alliances with smart TV producers such as LG and Samsung.

Buckman’s new role covers P&L responsibility for Telstra Media’s digital and IPTV division, not just marketing.

Telstra has already flagged its media ambitions are a growth area and Buckman is now front and centre of Telstra’s intent to be a major digital media player in the Australian market.

Significant changes are also said to be in the wings for BigPond.

“It’s too early for me to talk but clearly we have an ambition to be the leading IPTV and digital media platform in this market and it fits strongly with the programming and content strategies we have,” Buckman said.
