The world's largest publicly listed marketing and communications groups, including WPP and Omnicom, saw combined revenue surge 8.1% last year, according to a new report.

Despite wider issues in the global economy, marcomms holding groups saw strong growth in revenue, when their respective full-year reporting results are combined.

The report was conducted by online research publication Marketing Services Financial Intelligence.

It indicates that WPP, with 7.9% growth to US$14.2 billion in revenue, and Omnicom, with 10.6% growth to US$12.5 billion in revenue, led most of the growth.

In total, global marketing groups pulled in $61.6 billion in revenue last year.

Behind WPP and Omnicom, the group's with the next highest revenue were Publicis Groupe, Interpublic Group, Dentsu, Havas, and Aegis Group.

Publicis Groupe, in third position, had significantly lower revenue than both WPP and Omnicom, with US$7.1 billion in the year ended 31 December 2011.
